How Technology and COVID-19 Will Forever Transform Treatment for People with Substance Use Disorders
1.5 CE Credit
The COVID-19 pandemic forced an overnight adoption of telemedicine by virtually all mental health providers. Few clinicians or clinical programs had utilized patient facing technology in a meaningful way prior to April 2020. This forced digital mass migration in mental health treatment has also opened the door for radical new approaches in addiction treatment. The internet of things, artificial intelligence, big data and other innovations are in wide-spread use and completely transforming other professions. These innovations will be rapidly evolving how we treat substance use disorders over the next few years. However, there is still much that is unknown about the operational realities of this type of innovation. The integration of direct clinical practice, how to better engage and keep patients on software applications, the optimal length of time and frequency for technology-based treatment interventions, the ethics of patient data use and how to optimize machine learning with artificial intelligence will all need to be better understood and refined in production settings. This presentation will provide an overview of the technology trends that will dramatically reshape substance abuse treatment and provide a vision of how these trends could radically improve patient access and outcomes.
